Riverside Resource Recovery Facility

Waste supply

The majority of the waste for the RRR facility will be delivered from the four WRWA Boroughs. Waste will also come from Cory's contract with the City of London. These two contracts form the anchor waste supply (circa 60%) for the funding case. The remainder will come from other London boroughs (including potentially Bexley) and from commercial waste contracts.

The plant

Operation of the plant will commence in 2011, following a period of cold and hot commissioning. For the first four years, Cory staff will operate the plant under the guidance of expertise provided by VRI. The experience and knowledge gained during this time will be rolled out to other Cory developments across the UK.

The RRR facility will use conventional moving grate combustion technology, with a thermal efficiency of around 27%. This places it at the forefront of UK and European EfW technology for electricity generation.

The plant is designed to have the capability of providing waste heat for use by nearby homes. Consultants PB Power have undertaken research to find an outlet for the heat. To date, however, they have concluded that the density of heat consumers in the local area is 'substantially lower' than is typical for district heating schemes in the UK and they question whether a small scheme would be viable. Cory is committed to keeping this situation under review.
