Riverside Resource Recovery Facility Background London currently landfills 53% of its municipal solid waste (1) and due to the lack of waste treatment facilities in the capital most of this is exported to the home counties and beyond. In 2002, Cory was awarded a 30-year contract with the Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA) to handle over 500,000 tonnes a year of municipal waste from four central London boroughs - Lambeth, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Cory also holds contracts with the City of London and Westminster Council. Every opportunity is taken to recycle as much of this waste as possible. That which remains (the residual waste) is placed in containers and transported down the Thames by tug and barge to Cory's Mucking Landfill site in Thurrock, however this site is scheduled to close in 2010. |
