Cory pioneers basic reading and writing programme for waste industry
Date: 24-08-2007

Cory Environmental in Southend has taken part in a pioneering series of Skills Development Workshops to help staff in the waste management industry improve on their basic reading and writing skills.

The basic literacy course was aimed at improving skills in areas which would be of direct benefits to the employees such as writing so they could fill in report sheets and teaching them to read maps. Twelve staff from Cory's Southend team attended learning sessions on one afternoon per week from May until August, and all have now successfully completed the programme.

Steve Barthaud, Cory's contract manager in Southend commented: “This course has made real difference as the guys who struggled before with basic reading and writing have learnt so much in a short space of time that they are now able to complete their own paperwork rather than asking their partners to do it for them. It's been a great benefit to the business in improving productivity and performance, and crucially has also increased the confidence of the employees who took part.”

Cllr Ian Robertson, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Waste at Southend-on-Sea council added: “ One in five adults in the UK experience difficulties with reading, writing and basic maths and I am delighted that Cory Environmental, one of Southend's major employers, is tackling this problem head on.”

Fiona Cummins, Cory's Learning and Development adviser commented: “As a company we have been really pleased with the results of the programme and we are now going to be rolling out to the rest of the Cory Environmental Municipal Services sites across the country.

The Basic Skills for the Waste Management Industry training scheme was funded we were EU Skills and delivered by the waste industry training body, WAMITAB. Following the success of the scheme in Southend and at another of Cory's sites at Epping, EU Skills is now planning to roll out the programme across the waste management sector.
