Cory Environmental welcomes the decision of the Planning Inspector to grant planning permission for the three year extension of operations at the Lyme & Wood landfill site.
Alistair Holl, Director of Resource Management for Cory Environmental, said: “We are very pleased that the Planning Inspector has supported our case that it is in the overall best interest of all concerned that landfilling should continue at the site in order to secure the final restoration of the site to a Country Park. In coming to his decision he has recognised that the Lyme & Wood landfill site provides an essential service to many companies in St Helens and Merseyside as it is the only operational landfill in the area.”
He continued: “This decision will now enable rapid progress to be made on the Country Park plans for the site. The extension of operations will allow us to enhance the restoration scheme. Our advanced restoration work has meant that 95,000 trees have already been planted, with many more to be planted early next year, and almost 60% of the Park will be released for public access in the spring.”
He concluded: “There are very stringent controls governing the site, which we have complied with consistently and we will continue to maintain the highest operational standards. We do however recognise the concerns of the local community and will work with local residents and the Liaison Committee to ensure that the site is operated in the most environmentally acceptable way possible.”
The enhanced restoration scheme for Lyme & Wood means that almost 60% of the Country Park will be available for public access by Spring 2010, over 70% by Winter 2010 and over 80% by Summer 2011.
