Cory Environmental celebrates recycling success Date: 14-10-2009 Rutland County Council has been chosen as a finalist for the National Recycling Awards. The Council has been nominated in the Local Authority Target Success category which recognises councils that have significantly increased their recycling rates over the last year. Cory Environmental has been the waste contractor for the Council since 1993 and in March 2008 was awarded a new seven year refuse, recycling and cleansing contract. The contract saw the introduction of an improved kerbside recycling scheme where residents were provided with three separate wheeled bins for waste, recycling and garden waste. Since the scheme was introduced in April 2008, the County has seen its recycling rate increase from *28.8 per cent to over 50 per cent. An additional 2284 tonnes of recycling been collected since the scheme began. In addition, 2500 tonnes of garden waste has been collected for composting, resulting in a total of 4784 tonnes of recyclable waste being collected, which otherwise would have gone to landfill. Mike Lowe, contract manager for Rutland said: “I am absolutely delighted and thrilled that Rutland County Council has been chosen as a finalist in the National Recycling Awards. We worked very closely with the Council to introduce the kerbside collection and civic amenity scheme and held a series of information roadshows throughout the County -staffed by Cory and Council employees- to inform residents about the introduction of the new service. Both schemes have helped to increase the recycling rates in the County. To be nominated as finalists for this award is recognition of all the hard work and effort from everyone involved to produce the significant changes achieved by Rutland.” The award night will take place on Tuesday 27 October at the London Hilton on Park Lane, where the winners of the category will be announced.
