New Cory trust unveils its first lot of funding for community projects
Date: 29-09-2009

Cory Environmental’s Highfield South Trust in the West Midlands has given its first grants of over £30,000 to two community projects.

The Daw End Methodist Church and the Rushall Labour Club in Walsall have both been awarded funding from the Trust, which was set up last autumn to support environmental improvement projects in the local area.

Daw End Methodist Church will use its grant of over £6,500 for a window replacement and the Rushall Labour Club will receive almost £28,000 to fund a brand new air conditioning unit for the club.

Brian Hudson from the Daw End Methodist Church said: “We are delighted that our application for funding to the Highfield South Trust has been accepted. Church members have been fundraising for many months and the Trust grant is an invaluable addition, enabling improvements to the church windows. We are really grateful for this boost.”

The awarded funding means that on 1 October the Trust will achieve its first major milestone since its launch, when the first cheque the Trust has donated will be awarded to the Daw End Methodist Church.

Margaret Hayes, the Chair of the Trust, hopes that this cheque will be the first of many: “Here at the Highfield South Trust, we’re keen to support any projects in the Rushall, Shelfield and High Heath areas, big and small, that will make a real difference to the lives of the local people.”

The Highfield South Trust is funded through landfill tax credits, which are raised by Cory Environmental, the operator managing the restoration of the Highfield South Quarry in Walsall.

Projects eligible for landfill tax funding include the restoration of historic buildings, refurbishment of community and sports centres, the improvement of some gardens and play areas and the enhancement of woodland, riverside and other wildlife habitats.

Cory has ten trusts throughout the country and together they have contributed £36million to thousands of projects over a period of ten years.
