Cory Environmental, one of the UK’s leading recycling and waste management companies and operator of the Lyme & Wood landfill site in Haydock, wishes to invite former miners from the Lyme Pit and Wood Pit to the unveiling of a Mining Memorial on the site on Thursday 10 September 2009.
Mark Silvester, Area Manager for Cory Environmental, said: “We want to invite all those who worked at the Lyme Pit and Wood Pit to the unveiling of this memorial to those who died or were injured whilst working at the pits.”
He continued “We have been working on the plans for this memorial with local representatives for many months. There were some terrible accidents over the years in these pits and we hope that this memorial will enable those involved to be remembered.”
The ceremony is to take place on Thursday 10 September at 11am at the Lyme & Wood landfill site, Vista Road, Haydock, WA11 0RN.
The memorial will be unveiled by former miner James Brennan, who worked at Wood Pit and then Parkside Pit for 35 years.
The memorial has been designed and produced by a team including Jenny Doyle of Cory Environmental, blacksmith Jim Plant from Cheadle and stonemasons Ian Knapper and Shaun Purdie.
Planning permission for the memorial was granted in April 2009 and construction is nearly complete. Cory has been working with the local Lyme & Wood Liaison Committee to agree the design and location of the memorial.
