Cory Environmental goes for gold at London awards ceremony
Date: 12-06-2009

Cory Environmental scooped two Green500 awards at a ceremony hosted by London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

Cory received the prestigious Green500 Gold Award for its Charlton Bargeworks site and a Silver Award for its Smugglers Way Transfer Station in Wandsworth, in recognition for the company’s dedication towards managing and reducing carbon emissions.

Over the past 12 months the company assessed levels of carbon emissions from both sites and used the data to develop action plans to manage and reduce emissions wherever possible. In total, seven action plans for each site were created with a completion date of 2010.

Cory’s progress on its targets set out for both sites were independently verified by the National Energy Foundation.

Nicola Topliss, Environmental Risk Manager for Cory Environmental, said: “These awards are evidence that our implementation of carbon management strategies has been successful and we are delighted to receive such recognition for our efforts.

“The two strategies we implemented at Charlton Bargeworks and Smugglers Way will form part of our corporate policy on carbon emissions. This month we will be rolling out a company-wide carbon policy known as the Carbon Management Commitment and we hope to see similar success across the whole business over the next 12 months.”

Cory was one of the first of London’s top 500 businesses to sign up to the Green500 initiative, which was set up by the London Development Agency (LDA) last year to encourage the biggest businesses in the capital to collectively reduce their carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes over the next two and a half years.

Only 73 companies were eligible for the awards, which took place at Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge ground, and only 22 silver and 26 gold awards were given.
