Cory Environmental is to lodge an appeal against the decision made yesterday by St Helens Council Planning Committee to refuse permission to continue operations at the Lyme & Wood Landfill Site until June 2012.
Alistair Holl, a director of Cory Environmental, stated: “Naturally we are very disappointed with the committee’s decision to refuse permission to allow the approved Country Park to be delivered. We have worked hard to ensure that the application met all the required policies and considered local concerns. Throughout the process we have liaised closely with the Council, the Environment Agency and representatives of the local community as a result of which we brought forward enhanced restoration proposals and ongoing operational improvements. The Council’s officers strongly recommended that planning permission be granted stating that there are very stringent controls governing the site which have been complied with consistently. Given this and that the Environment Agency and Merseyside Environmental Advisory Service raised no objections to the plans, we will now be lodging an appeal against the Council’s decision.”
He continued: “Lyme & Wood is the only operational landfill site in the Merseyside area and given the great demand for landfill space over the next three years this site would provide a vital service to local companies. The enhanced Country Park plans would also have delivered a valuable resource for the local community.”
