Cory Environmental has commissioned the building of four new tugs by shipbuilders Damen Shipyards Group. The tugs will be a welcome addition to Cory’s existing fleet, consolidating its operations on the River Thames. The arrival of the tugs in 2010 will enable Cory to decommission its existing fleet with the exception of the Regain.
The construction of the new riverside facility in Belvedere and the announcement that a new Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) is to be built at their Smugglers Way site in Wandsworth have led to Cory expanding its river operations to meet the demands of the future.
The new tugs are in the design of a Shoalbuster 2208 with additional features such as the ability to meet stringent air draft constraints. The tugs will be used to tow barges carrying London’s waste in sealed containers down the River Thames.
Cory Environmental has been operating on the River Thames for more than a century and is the largest lighterage operator on the river. The transportation of residual waste by river to riverside and the MRF facility will save at least 1.3 million HGV miles per year.
Malcolm Ward, Chief Executive of Cory Environmental, said: “Cory’s river operations are integral to the company’s success and transporting waste by river is an environmentally friendly way to deal with London’s waste. It helps to reduce the number of HGV vehicles on London’s roads, reduces congestion and cuts carbon emissions. The order of the new tugs will ensure Cory maintains its high standards of operations on the river for many years to come.”
