Funding secured for Riverside Resource Recovery facility
Date: 01-08-2008

The RRR facility, being constructed in Bexley, will process an average of 585,000 tonnes of waste a year, generating 72 MW of electricity, enough to supply 66,000 homes.

Most of the residual waste will be transported to the RRR facility in sealed containers carried by barge on the River Thames. Cory is the largest lighhterage operator on the river, and bringing the RRR facility on line will save at least 1.3 million HGV miles per year.

Malcolm Ward, Chief Executive Officer, Cory Environmental, said: 'This is a significant milestone in the project's history. Construction work on the site started in January this year, and we are happy with progress to date. The way is now clear for work to start on the main development next month.'

The RRR facility is scheduled to begin operating in 2011. Total construction costs are £350 million.
