Official figures rate Southend-on-Sea Borough Council in the country’s top ten for recycling a wide range of materials from kerbside collections.
This was revealed in a national survey of 397 local authorities conducted by the Government’s Waste and Resources Action Programme.
The Council’s Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Waste, Councillor Ian Robertson says: “This is excellent news. We are delighted our recycling record has been recognised nationally, and that Southend is in the top ten of so many other authorities”.
“The result is a thanks to the tremendous work undertaken by the Council in partnership with Cory to improve recycling opportunities in the borough, and it is also a tribute to our residents for making the most of the recycling chances offered.”
“Congratulations to all concerned, and let’s keep up the good work! We are doing really well but there is always the opportunity of doing just that little bit better”.
The Managing Director of Cory Environmental Municipal Services Ltd Paul Redman says: “I am proud that Cory has been able to help the Council achieve a position in the top ten and it is good to see the hard work of all of our staff recognised in this way”.
Notes to Journalists:
1. Our 2007/08 figure of 23.8% for recycling was in the top quarter for unitary authorities. Our 9.88% for composting was in the second quarter for unitary — giving a combined total of 33.68%.
2. We met our target of 32% for 07/08 and have improved from 21% in 2005/6.
3. The Council is also considering a borough wide food waste collection after a successful trial, which will further improve rates.
