Sainsbury's has successfully completed a week long trial transporting containers on the River Thames using Cory Environmental's barges from a south-east London depot to its store in West London. On almost every occasion the supermarket found that the containers were transported more quickly than on their usual road journey.
Sea and Water, which promotes the cause of water transport in the UK, hailed the trial as a success. Newly-appointed director, Francis Power, says the trial 'demystifies' the notion that water freight is slow. Sea and Water, together with its supporters including the Port of London Authority, Cory Environmental and others that comprise Britain's water freight industry, delivered the goods for Sainsbury's and it has proved to be a boost for the unsung inland, coastal and short-sea shipping industry.'
Cory Environmental has been moving materials by river since 1896 and today is the largest lighterage operator on the upper reaches of the Thames. The award winning lighterage operation transports 15% of all London's waste by river, keeping 100,000 heavy goods vehicle movements a year off London's already congested roads. |
