Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust

Celebration Fund

During 2011 Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust (ICET) celebrates its tenth Birthday. While most people receive gifts on their birthday, ICET is giving away £250,000 of funds as a birthday present.

Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust was born in February 2001 when Ibstock Brick and Cory Environmental came together to create a trust to fund community projects. The Trust distributes funds from landfill tax, collected from operational Cory Environmental landfill sites that have links to Ibstock Brick works, under the Landfill Communities Fund. Over the past ten years it has received over five hundred applications and supported over 250 community projects with funding totalling over £4.5 million.

Celebration Fund update - September 2011

Following the creation of a Celebration Fund in January to celebrate ICET’s tenth birthday, organisations were invited to present community projects that needed £50,000 or more. The Trust received a wide range of applications and selected a project from each of its three regions of operation for an award of £50,000. The three winners have the chance for one of them to win up to a further £100,000, and will present details of their projects to Trustees in November for a chance to secure the further funding they need.

Sevenoaks Area

In Sevenoaks , Sevenoaks Town Council has secured £50,000 from the Trust to build a Youth Café based alongside the town’s Stag Community Arts Centre. The Café will be a meeting place for young people, where they can socialise and learn new skills in a relaxed environment. It has had support from the local community since the idea to build it was born 20 years ago, but securing the funding has proved difficult. In total the project will cost £140,000 and take eight months to complete. The building will include disabled access, new toilet facilities, and a coffee and internet bar.

“Trustees decided that this project would benefit the local community significantly. After school and in school holidays young people will be able to get together, meet new friends and also talk about a variety of issues with youth workers in confidence,” said Angela Haymonds, Trust Secretary.

Chief Executive of Sevenoaks Town Council, Linda Larter, said: “We are very excited to have won funding from the first round of ICET’s Celebration Fund for our project. This is an important step in getting the project finally underway. A public consultation has shown tremendous support for this project and everyone thought the Stag Community Arts Centre was an ideal venue for the new Youth Café. We are now preparing for a presentation in November with a view to securing additional funding in ICET’s final round that would support the project in its entirety. The £50,000 we have just been awarded is tremendous. The idea to build a Youth Café began 20 years ago and will soon be a reality. We are hoping that we will be successful in the next funding round and that the Youth Café can be up and running in 2012.”

Dudley Area

In Sandwell, RSPB’s Sandwell Nature Reserve has won £50,000 funding to build a new visitor centre. The Nature Reserve’s new community hub visitor centre will replace the previous centre destroyed in an arson attack. Trustees decided that this project would create a valuable venue for visitors to meet and learn about the environment. The centre will become a community hub and provide a building satisfying the needs of people visiting the reserve,” said Angela Haymonds, Trust Secretary.

The £50,000 will provide an important component of the overall project to re-instate the visitor centre at Sandwell Valley, the total value of which is over £250,000.

Regional Development Officer for RSPB Sandwell Valley Nature reserve, Renata Astle-Lunt said: “We are very excited to have won funding from the first round of ICET’s Celebration Fund for our project. The work will enhance significantly the experience that visitors have when they come to the Sandwell Valley Reserve. We are now preparing for a presentation in November with a view to securing additional funding in their final round that would enhance the project further. The £50,000 we have just been given is fabulous and will secure the build of a new visitor centre tailored to the needs of the community. We are looking forward to presenting plans for the centre extension. To secure a further £100,000 in the second round in November would allow us to create a fantastic extension to the centre.”

South Gloucestershire Area

In Bristol, Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled has won funding of £50,000 to build a new roof over the Centre’s indoor disabled riding arena. The new roof will enable the Centre to continue to provide riding facilities during the harsh winter months. In total the project to replace the 30 year old roof that is in disrepair will cost £141,000.

“The roof not only provides shelter from the weather, but also light through plastic windows that are now deteriorating. It will give a new lease of life to the Centre.” said Angela Haymonds, Trust Secretary.

Vice Chair of Avon Riding Centre for the Disabled, Peter Warren, said: “We are very excited to have won funding from the first round of ICET’s Celebration Fund for our project. The project marks the first stage of a series of projects that will secure the long term future of the Centre. We currently work with 120 disabled children and 70 adults every week. Rain and harsh weather stops riding within the arena in its tracks. We are now preparing for a presentation in November with a view to securing additional funding in ICET’s final round that would support the project in its entirety. The £50,000 we have just been awarded is fantastic. All our work is funded through voluntary contributions and fundraising efforts, so this money will make a significant difference to the Centre and the people who use it. We are looking forward to presenting plans to secure the rest of the funds we need in the second round in November.”
