Cory Environmental Trust in Thurrock

The Cory Environmental Trust in Thurrock was established in early 1997 and was one of the first Trusts in the country to be set up under the Landfill Tax Regulations. The Trust has received substantial funding over the last five years, in the order of £1 million per annum, which has been allocated to a variety of projects throughout Thurrock.

The Trust developed spending criteria early on to ensure that funds were spread out fairly, ensuring optimum benefit to the community. Three categories were identified to which priority was given: projects relating to the River Thames; projects in the immediate area around Cory's landfill site at Mucking; and wider community schemes, particularly those which benefit children.

As with most of the 'local' Trusts to which Cory contributes, the Trust has six Trustees who together vet the applications and choose those which most closely meet the Trust's criteria. Two of the Trustees are nominated; one by Thurrock Council and one by Cory Environmental. The remaining four Trustees are elected.
